Aerstone Releases Hospitality Industry White Paper on Privacy

ROCKVILLE, Maryland — April 19, 2016 — Quest Consultants LLC DBA Aerstone today released a white paper urging the hospitality industry to develop its own regulations for guest privacy, in advance of government regulation in this area.  Aerstone’s publication also suggests that the first hotels that implement robust privacy standards will have a market advantage over hotels that don’t, which may prove especially important in attracting the highly desirable and lucrative business traveler market.

Aerstone notes the risk of a traveler’s personal information becoming compromised by an unauthorized source or internal threat can lead to more serious issues than just a stolen credit card number, or even identity theft.  Hospitality providers are in a unique position to collect an enormous amount of data on hotel guests, in the following core categories:

  • Personally identifiable information (“PII”)
  • Signals intelligence (“SIGINT”)
  • Human intelligence (“HUMINT”)
  • Geospatial intelligence (“GEOINT”)

The white paper also offers a “Hospitality Guests’ Bill of Rights” – a privacy framework that proposes limited number of security controls, against which hotels should be periodically audited, by an independent third party assessor.  This Bill of Rights includes certain hospitality guest privileges including (but not limited to):

  • The Right to Be Informed of Current Privacy Policy
  • The Right to Be Given Notice of Any Policy Changes
  • The Right to Obtain a Copy of Collected Information
  • The Right to Have One’s Data Erased or Anonymized
